A first judgement can change quickly as we learn more.
When a situation changes unexpectedly, our first reaction is often simple:
This is difficult.
And sometimes it genuinely is.
A new role. A new boss. A reorganisation. A decision we did not make. A plan that suddenly no longer works. A new, important client we find difficult.
But over the years, I have learnt that there may be another way to look at it:
Maybe it is not Difficult, but simply Different.
Different does not mean easy. It simply changes the question and opens the mind.
Instead of only asking, “Why is this happening?”, we can now begin asking, “What is different now?”
What can I influence going forward?
What do I need to understand that I did not before?
What might I start to do differently?
And eventually, a third possibility may appear on the horizon:
How can this ultimately become Useful and why?
Not every difficult experience becomes useful automatically. We have to look for what it can teach us — or what alternative ways forward it may offer.
Sometimes the useful part is a new skill. Sometimes it is understanding people better. And sometimes it is simply teaching us not to judge a situation too quickly.
Is it Difficult?
Or is it just Different?
Or could it even become Useful?
Three words do not make a problem disappear.
But they can change the way we look at it.
And sometimes a different perspective is exactly where personal growth begins.
